How To Protect Your Furniture
Stretch/Shrink Wrap
Stretch wrap is a highly practical and simple wrapping material designed specifically for protecting furniture from dirt, dust, and scratches during the moving process. Often mistaken for saran wrap, stretch wrap resembles it in appearance but is significantly larger and sturdier, specifically engineered for moving purposes.
When utilizing shrink wrap, we strongly recommend starting by securely wrapping or tying the end to a sturdy leg or any stable part of the furniture, beginning low and gradually working your way up the entire piece.
It is essential to ensure that as you wrap around the furniture, the shrink wrap is effectively connecting with the previous layer of wrap and is being stretched appropriately to achieve the best adhesiveness possible for maximum protection.
Felt Pads & Sliders
Felt pads are highly effective tools for safeguarding floors from unsightly scratches and scuffs that can result from the contact points of various types of furniture, including dresser legs, chairs, TV consoles, and more.
These felt pads often come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, but square pads tend to provide better coverage across all contact points, ensuring maximum protection. Of course, felt pads are particularly beneficial for protecting hardwood, vinyl, and laminate flooring, although they are not as effective on carpeted surfaces.
This is where sliders come into play. Sliders are typically sizable, round plastic pieces that sit comfortably on the bottom of furniture, making it significantly easier to glide the furniture across carpet without the need to lift it or risk damaging either the carpet or the furniture itself.
Moving Blankets
Moving blankets should always come standard with your move when your moving company arrives at your location. Moving blankets provide much greater purpose than just simply protecting your furniture from scratches and dents during the transport process.
Professional movers will oftentimes meticulously wrap and cover all items, but it is especially crucial that fragile items such as pictures, glass, artwork, and other similarly delicate items are very thickly protected to prevent any potential damage during the move.
One effective way you can save yourself time and stress on the day of your move, while also ensuring that your most valuable or fragile items are thoroughly protected, is by using moving blankets to properly cover these items before then going over the blanket and item with stretch wrap to hold everything securely in place.
Some important considerations to remember include that leather furniture should always be cared for with great attention and wrapped cautiously, as it is very easy to scratch or puncture if not properly protected. This same principle applies to other items for which you may have concerns, such as elegant dining tables, nightstands, dressers, and more.
Although your movers will carry protective pads and do their utmost to safeguard your furniture, you can always implement these additional protective measures prior to your move to ensure extra precautions are taken towards protecting your valuable belongings.
Mattress Covers
Generally speaking, as long as your mattress is appropriately covered with bed sheets or linens, which you can then easily wash later, your mattress will be well protected against most types of dirt and damage. However, if you still have lingering concerns about potentially getting your mattress dirty during a move, then investing in mattress covers is definitely the way to go.
There are many different types of mattress covers available on the market, but the best and highest quality options are those that are heavy-duty and feature zippers, as they often come equipped with handles for added convenience, making them much easier to move.
Cheaper alternative mattress cover bags may also be available, but it is important to note that these covers are usually made from thin pieces of plastic that can easily rip and tear when handling them, as they are not nearly as durable as the more robust zip-up mattress covers.
Additionally, be sure to remember to obtain the correct size mattress cover to fit your particular bed, because selecting a cover that is too small will not adequately protect your mattress, while one that is too large can create difficulties during the moving process due to the extra slack and loose plastic that could get in the way.
Disassembly
Sometimes, the best and most practical way to go about effectively protecting your valuable furniture is by disassembling it. This proactive approach can help prevent your movers from having to tackle this task themselves, while also making it easier and more compact during the overall moving process.
Furniture that is most frequently disassembled during moves includes items such as bed frames, cribs, weight equipment, hutches, and bookshelves with loose shelves.
By taking apart your furniture ahead of time, you will not only make your moving process significantly faster but also save both time and money. Additionally, this careful preparation helps to eliminate any potential concerns regarding the safety and security of your furniture during transit.
